PRP Q & A

The Beauty Medics

What are platelet-rich plasma injections for hair restoration?

To create platelet-rich plasma, Dr. Bokhari and his team withdraw your blood and then spin it down in a centrifuge so that only the enriched cells (the platelet-rich plasma) remain. The team then injects this PRP into your scalp to stimulate hair regrowth.

How does PRP stimulate hair growth?

PRP contains essential proteins, known as growth factors, that stimulate natural hair growth. Growth factors signal skin cells to grow. In this case, the growth factors target the hair follicles so they promote new hair growth.

Research supports PRP injections’ potential in increasing the number of hairs, the thickness of hair, and the growth phase of the hair cycle. Patients experience less shedding, followed by regrowth and increased hair length.

Who are the best candidates for PRP injections for hair restoration?

Anyone with unwanted hair loss is a good candidate. However, those with early hair loss often experience the best results. Men and women with thinning hair benefit, especially those with genetic androgenic alopecia.

You can use PRP injections in conjunction with hair transplant surgery, microneedling, or medications designed to stimulate hair regrowth.

What should I expect during PRP injections for hair restoration?

You’ll come into The Beauty Medics office for a blood draw from veins in your arm. The team then spins the blood to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. They inject the plasma directly into your scalp at the level of the hair follicles. You’ll have multiple injections, placed approximately every half inch across the area where hair is thinning. The process usually takes about 30 minutes.

Are PRP injections for hair restoration painful?

Most patients tolerate the procedure well, which involves minimal discomfort and no downtime following treatment. Most people do well without any anesthetic. You can go back to your regular daily activities right after treatment.

How many treatments before I see results?

You schedule treatments once every four weeks for about six cycles. Dr. Bokhari and his team recommend regular maintenance treatments scheduled every three to six months for optimal stimulation of the hair follicles.
