Laser Hair Removal Q & A

The Beauty Medics

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal uses the intense, pulsating beam of light of a special laser to eliminate unwanted hair. The energy of the laser damages your hair follicles, rendering them unable to grow hair in the future. At The Beauty Medics, the staff uses the GentleMax Pro® by SYNERON CANDELA®, one of the most highly rated lasers available.

What areas can be treated with lasers for hair removal?

Laser hair removal is effective and safe on many areas of the body. These include:

  • Small areas, such as the underarms, lower lip, chin, ab trail, fingers, and toes
  • Medium areas, such as the shoulders, lower arms and legs, thighs, and female abdomen
  • Large areas, such as an entire arm, entire leg, chest, back, and male abdomen

Laser hair removal can also be used for a full face treatment or a Brazilian bikini treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Most people need a minimum of six treatments to fully weaken the hair follicle and prevent future hair growth. Plus, hair grows in cycles, so it takes several sessions to target each follicle in its growth phase.

You may notice minimal results after your first session. Hair may appear thinner and grow more slowly. With multiple treatments, the follicle becomes weaker and weaker so the hair eventually stops growing.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

The GentleMax Pro is equipped with a cooling device that helps in reducing discomfort during the laser session. This cooling feature also protects your top layer of skin.

Laser hair removal does cause some discomfort, but most people handle it well. If you find it unbearable, ask about a topical anesthetic and take ibuprofen prior to your appointment.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Prior to coming in for laser hair removal, shave the treatment areas. Do not wax, thread, or pluck them, however. Always shave between treatment sessions, too.

Does laser hair removal require downtime?

Laser hair removal is non-invasive. You don’t need any special time off or care following a session, but do avoid exposure to direct sunlight for about one week following treatment. Feel free to go right back to work or other daily activities immediately after treatment.
