What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable medication formulated from Clostridium botulinum, a substance found naturally in forests, lakes, and soil. In certain concentrations, this substance is incredibly toxic, but the amount used when formulating Botox is perfectly safe. 

When injected into targeted muscles, Botox prevents those muscles from going through their full range of motion. You’ll be able to make normal facial expressions, but the muscles won’t be strong enough to tug and pull your skin into lines, wrinkles, and folds. 

Botox is approved to treat crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. It can also be used off-label to treat other areas of the face. Some people have Botox in just one area, while others use the injections to refine multiple areas of their face. 

What is the process for getting Botox?

Getting Botox is a simple and straightforward process. The entire office visit takes less than half an hour, and the injections only take a few moments. There is no need for any form of preparation or anesthesia. 

The needles used in Botox treatments are very thin, and there is no significant pain associated with treatment. You may feel a slight pinch as the needle enters your skin, but there is no lingering discomfort. There’s no need for downtime, and you can return to your normal activities immediately after the visit. 

How long do Botox results last?

It takes around 24-48 hours for your results to develop. You can expect those results to last about four months. At that point, you’ll begin to notice your lines and wrinkles slowly returning and can decide if you’d like to come in for another round of treatment. 

Some people choose to have Botox in preparation for a big event like a wedding or reunion. Others make Botox part of their ongoing aesthetic routine and schedule their injections over the course of a year or longer. Botox is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
